Creating Illusions

Video

This is where you get into the serious business of putting it all together

i.e. coordinating with your departments to get effects that people will believe

EDITING

A lot can be accomplished with a simple and well-placed cut, cut to the actor finishing that action

i.e. you need to know in advance, where one shot ends and the other begins, so that you can piece them together

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Determining the angles you use to shoot from

SPECIAL MAKE-UP EFFECTS

Weapons are hard, use multiple shots and devices

Dummies used as stand-ins

Puppets combined with animatronic technology

And even use camera reversal

REVERSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Often easier

PRODUCTION DESIGN

Environment where your story takes place = a character unto itself

Walls closing in  or reaching out

Rotating room

Hide part of body

Holes cut into set

Mirror gag

You need doubles of everything (including room)

Forced perspective

Camera perspective

Miniatures

COMPOSITING

Take separate layers of film and combine them into one
